THEORY OF CHANGE

YMWAP’s theory of change is

Our Model

YMWAP recruits 8th and 9th grade students “in the middle” from 8 Boston schools. Throughout grades 7 -12, young men receive 3 hours of weekly mentoring focused on developing academic, social-emotional, wellness, and financial literacy skills, plus college & career planning, to access sustainable futures in Boston and beyond.

Evaluation

Our overall goal is that young men leave YMWAP as great human beings, with improved grades and social emotional skills, greater purpose, more likely to pursue healthy relationships, to be critical thinkers, to take care of their mental and physical well-being, and to have financial literacy.

In 2018, with the support of consultant Dr. Julia Gittleman, YMWAP developed a “right-sized” set of evaluation tools.

YMWAP measures academic and social emotional growth, graduation rates, avoidance of the criminal justice system and teen parenthood, and development and fulfillment of college and career success plans.

Our graduates attend BU, Bates, Carnegie Mellon, Northeastern, Wentworth, UMass, Framingham State, Bunker Hill Community College, Year Up, and more.

They study accounting, aeronautical, mechanical and electrical engineering, business, computer science, cybersecurity, marine biology, marketing, design, speech pathology, education, and more.

They are employed as airplane mechanics, carpenters, IT specialists, artists, engineers, and by the City of Boston.

“I’ve learned that I too can be successful if I put the work in. I’ve also learned that being educated and having a work ethic is not lame; in fact, that is what is cool to me now.”

YMWAP Closes on Home in Hyde Park

On January 6, Young Man with a Plan officially purchased 1178 River Street in Hyde Park—the building we’ve rented for the past four years!
