Student Registration

YMWP serves young men in the middle, recommended by school leaders, teachers, counselors, school-based mentors, and current YMWAP participants. We also provide lunch recruitment programming at our partner schools, and 1:1 parent info sessions.

Young men in the middle are often overlooked because they’re neither the highflyers nor the acutely at-risk.

YMWAP is especially valuable for students in the middle two quartiles who need a safe place to belong, need strong male role models, need to build confidence and social skills, are at risk of not receiving post-secondary guidance and resources because they are quiet and “getting by,” but would benefit greatly from sustained guidance and mentorship.

While the majority of young men live in Roxbury, Dorchester, and Mattapan, YMWAP brings together Black and Latino men from every Boston neighborhood and many cultures: African Americans who have resided in Boston for generations, along with students newly immigrated from Haiti, Puerto Rico, Cape Verde, Jamaica, Trinidad, Mexico, Colombia, Africa, DR, and El Salvador.

Our model has a school-based mentor (teacher, coach, counselor) in each of our 8 partner schools who serves as a liaison and is part of our multi-level mentoring team.

YMWAP staff also get to know school leaders, key teachers, and counselors at each school. Dr. Jay Simpson leads teacher dialogues and research on engaging young men in the classroom.

Each September, YMWAP staff bring in pizza for lunchtime info/recruiting sessions, and present at Fall parent nights and activity fairs. We have parents call us about enrolling their sons, and we have students bring their friends who they believe will benefit from holistic mentoring.

Our Mentors

YMWAP depends on a team of school-based mentors to serve young men from 8 Boston schools:

Each school designates a school-based mentor: a staff member who provides mentoring and monitoring for the Young Man with a Plan participants at that school.

School-Based Mentors:

  • Conduct weekly 1:1 check-ins with their mentees
  • Monitor participants’ grades, GPAs, attendance, and disciplinary records
  • Meet with YMWAP leadership to discuss each young man’s goals, progress, and concerns, as well as contribute to program planning
  • Attend YMWAP group meetings and activities
  • Communicate with their school leadership about participants’ progress and challenges
  • Support recruitment within their schools
  • Receive professional development and annual compensation
